Vermont Mountaineers News Release

LACONIA, N.H. - The Laconia Muskrats defeated the Vermont Mountaineers, 9-4, in New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL) action at Robbie Mills Field on Sunday night.

With the win, Laconia improves to 14-10 and moves into sole possession of first place in the Northern Division. Vermont has its four-game winning streak snapped and falls to 12-10 on the summer.

With the score tied at two entering the bottom of the seventh inning, the Muskrats pushed seven runs across to take a commanding 9-2 lead. Vermont left-handed reliever Garrison Banas (Hadley, Mass. / Bryant) came on to start the inning in place of starter Casey Brown (Wenonah, N.J. / Central Connecticut State). Banas hit the first two batters he faced and walked the third to load the bases with no outs. The Mountaineers called upon fellow lefty Austin Foote (Lake Zurich, Ill. / Indiana) to get them out of the jam.

After striking out the first batter he faced, the Mountaineers committed back-to-back errors, allowing two Laconia runners to score and make it 4-2 Muskrats with the bases still loaded and one out. Laconia catcher Deon Stafford (Marysville, Pa. / St. Joseph's) followed with a two RBI double to make the game 6-2. After an intentional walk of third baseman Braxton Martinez (St. Peter's, Mo. / St. Louis) loaded the bases once again, a fielder's choice, and RBI single and a wild pitch plated three more runs to make the score 9-2.

Vermont responded with two runs in the top of the eighth, when second baseman Garrett Copeland (Bartlett, Tenn. / Austin Peay) drew a one out two batters before his college teammate in third baseman Ridge Smith (Clarksville, Tenn. / Austin Peay) blasted a two out, two-run homerun over the green wall in left field to cut the deficit to five, at 9-4.

Vermont scored two runs in the top of the fifth to take a short lived 2-0 lead. Jack Parenty (Wantagh, N.Y. / Stony Brook) kicked the inning off with a two out walk. Designated hitter Kevin Stypulkowski (Lake Worth, Fla. / Maine Orono) followed with a walk to put two runners aboard with two outs. Shortstop Devin Hairston (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) connected on a base hit to right-center field to score Parenty from second and provide Vermont with a 1-0 edge. After rightfielder Riley Jackson (Lexington, Ky. / Louisville) walked to re-load the bases, leftfielder Nick Ruppert (La Mesa, Calif. / Dartmouth) drew a walk to score Stypulkowski and make it 2-0 Mountaineers.

Laconia answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth and one in the sixth to tie the score at two before erupting in the seventh.

Banas took the loss for Vermont in relief, as he entered the game in the seventh but did not record an out. He allowed three unearned runs on no hits, one walk and two hit batters. He drops to 0-2 on the summer.

Muskrats' reliever Bobby Kelly (Mineola, N.Y. / Molloy) earned the win to improve to 1-0 on the season. Kelly tossed one perfect inning of relief and struck out three in the frame.

The Mountaineers will next play on Monday evening, when they host Keene for a 6:30 p.m. affair at Recreation Field. The meeting will mark the first of a two-game home stand. The contest can be heard locally on CBS Sports 1240 WSKI and online at thevermontmountaineers.com.
