Bay Sox Take Game One

July 5, 2015 - New England Collegiate Baseball League (NECBL)
New Bedford Bay Sox News Release

The Bay Sox would walk off in game one of two, against the Plymouth Pilgrims last night at Paul Walsh Field, as Alex Lee (Samford) dropped down an eighth inning squeeze bunt which plated the winning run for New Bedford.

The eighth inning started when Tyler Orris (Millersville) drew a leadoff walk. Ryan Baldwin (Barry) followed by successfully reaching base on a bunt. Anthony Critelli (Holy Cross) would get on base by an error from the Plymouth shortstop. Alex Lee, who has only seen action in five games this season for New Bedford, was the hero in this one as his perfectly placed squeeze allowed Orris to hustle home from third base giving the Bay Sox the walk-off victory.

New Bedford struck first in the third inning as three runs would come across home plate. Ryan Baldwin drove in the initial run of the ballgame with a sacrifice fly that scored T.J Dixon (Samford). The next batter, Anthony Critelli (Holy Cross) brought two more runs home with a double.

They added an extra run in the fourth inning as Ted Shaw (Sacred Heart) brought home his college teammate Jayson Sullivan with an RBI single.

Plymouth responded in the fifth inning by scoring four runs themselves tying the game at four apiece. The Pilgrims saw offensive production from the middle of their lineup, as Justin Smith (Miami) and NECBL leading hitter Brent Rooker (Mississippi State) brought in three of their teams four runs in the fifth. Rooker had himself a two-RBI double.

Justin Thomas (Quinnipiac) made his fifth start of the year for New Bedford by tossing four innings, allowing just two runs off of three hits. He struck out two Pilgrims and received a no-decision in his efforts.

At the end of five innings of game two, New Bedford was leading 1-0, as Critelli hit his second RBI-double of the night, bringing home Jayson Sullivan to take the early lead.

PhIll Reese (Holy Cross) made his first start for New Bedford in game two and had only allowed two hits to Plymouth through four innings of play.

New Bedford will travel to Mystic tonight to take on the first-place Schooners hoping to get a game up in the playoff race as the 2015 season winds down. Michael Young (Stonehill) gets the ball for his fifth start with his record sitting at 1-1 and his ERA just under three at 2.82.
