Calgary Stampeders News Release
The Calgary Stampeders are pleased to announce that defensive end Mike Labinjo and kicker Sandro DeAngelis have been recognized by the Canadian Football League as players of the week for their efforts in last Friday's 36-29 win over the BC Lions.
Labinjo had five tackles, a sack and a knockdown to earn the nod as top Canadian of Week 9. The second-year Stampeder is enjoying a breakout season and has been one of Calgary's top defensive players in 2008.
DeAngelis converted all five of his field-goal attempts against the Lions and did a nice job on kickoffs - even registering a tackle - to take honours as the top special-teams player. The fourth-year Stamps kicker is the most accurate kicker in CFL history, making 82.7 per cent of his field goals (148 of 179).
"Our win over BC was a total team effort," said Stamps head coach/general manager John Hufnagel. "But it's nice to see Sandro and Mike receive personal recognition for their work. They're both having great seasons and they're important members of our football club."
Despite possessing the league's second-best record - 5-3 - this is the first time in 2008 that any Stamps player received weekly recognition.
Due to a previously scheduled day off, Labinjo and DeAngelis won't be available to the media today. They can be interviewed on Wednesday when the Stamps return to the practice field. The team practises from 10:10 a.m. to 12:23 p.m. and players are available immediately afterwards.
The next Stampeders home game is Monday, Sept. 1 against the Edmonton Eskimos. Kickoff is 2 p.m. Tickets are going fast, so fans are encouraged to contact the Stampeders Ticket Office at 403.289.0258 or visit Stampeders.com before the game is sold out.
