Galaxy Team Notes
GALAXY TO CO-HOST BONE MARROW DONE DRIVE ON TUESDAY: The LA Galaxy have joined forces with Chivas USA and The Home Depot Center to host a Bone Marrow Donor Drive on Tuesday at The Home Depot Center. The event, which will be held inside Event Suite 1, will run from 8 a.m. until 2 p.m. with the aim of assisting Marcia Williams, the wife of Real Salt Lake and Jamaican National Team midfielder Andy Williams, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of leukemia and has been unable to find a match through the national donor registry.
City of Hope will be on site to facilitate the process which entails completing a short questionnaire and then giving a swab of cheeks cells. Please note, while we are seeking to find a match for Marcia, all donors will be entered into the NATIONAL BONE MARROW REGISTRY and may be contacted if they are a match for someone in need.
For more information about this event, please contact the Galaxy Communications office.
MARSHALL ARRIVES ON TRIAL: Last week the Galaxy welcomed defender Yohance Marshall to training on a trial. The 6-2 center back was a four-year starter at South Florida, helping lead the Bulls to the Big East title as a senior in 2008 and a berth in the NCAA Tournament quarterfinals where they fell to Wake Forest. A native of Diego Martin, Trinidad and a member of the Trinidad and Tobago U-21 National Team, Marshall was undrafted in the 2009 MLS SuperDraft last month.
PAN-PACIFIC CREDENTIALS AVAILABLE NOW: Credential applications are now available for the 2009 Pan-Pacific Championship which will be held at The Home Depot Center later this month. The tournament, which features the Galaxy against three of the top clubs from Asia, begins on Wednesday, February 18 and wraps up with the Third-Place Game and Final on Saturday, February 21. ON LOAN UPDATES: David Beckham and Landon Donovan remain in Europe on loan with AC Milan and Bayern Munich respectively, with both players scheduled to return on March 8, two weeks ahead of the Galaxy's season opener against D.C. United.
Beckham helped Milan earn four points last week with a 1-1 draw against Genoa and a 3-0 win over Lazio, moving them up to second in the Serie A standings. Beckham scored his second goal for Milan against Genoa and then shook off an injury to set up a pair of goals in his team's 3-0 win over Lazio on Sunday.
The 33-year old midfielder, who has been included on Milan's UEFA Cup roster, is back in action on Wednesday in a friendly against Rangers in Glasgow and Milan return to Serie A duty on Saturday with a home game against Reggina.
Donovan made a pair of appearances last week for Bayern Munich, coming off the bench in his team's 5-1 win over Stuttgart in the DFB Cup and then again in their 1-0 loss to Hamburg in Bundesliga action. Bayern, who currently sit in fourth place in the Bundesliga with 35 points, three behind the leaders TSG Hoffenheim, will look to get back in the win column this week when they host Borussia Dortmund on Sunday.
PAN-PACIFIC CHAMPIONSHIP NEARS CLOSER: The 2009 Pan-Pacific Championship is now just over two weeks away and tickets are on sale now. The Galaxy have already begun training here in Southern California as they look to improve upon their third place finish from the 2008 Pan-Pacific. They will be joined next month by this year's other participants, Oita Trinita of the J. League, Shandong Luneng of the Chinese Super League and Suwon Samsung Bluewings of the K-League, all of who will be in Los Angeles in early-to-mid-February. The second edition of the Pan-Pacific Championship opens on Wednesday, February 18 and culminates with the Final and Third Place games on Saturday, February 21.
