LA Galaxy News Release
LOS ANGELES - The LA Galaxy have issued the following statement on the passing of Sigi Schmid:
"The LA Galaxy are deeply saddened by the passing of Sigi Schmid. Sigi was a pillar of the Southern California and United States soccer community. He was a pioneer and his influence on the sport of soccer in the United States will long be felt. Sigi was a man of character, a good father, husband, friend and a passionate coach who respected everyone. He will always be a part of our family. We mourn his loss and offer our deepest sympathies to his family during this difficult time."
Schmid, a National Soccer Hall of Fame inductee, is the all-time winningest Head Coach in MLS history after accumulating a 240-183-125 regular-season record over 19 seasons with the LA Galaxy, Columbus Crew SC and Seattle Sounders FC. The two-time MLS Coach of the Year also won two MLS Cup titles, three Supporters' Shields and five Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cups, in addition to three NCAA National Championships at UCLA.
In lieu of flowers or other gifts, the family asks to please consider a memorial gift to support the men's soccer program at UCLA, Sigi's alma mater. Donations in memory of Sigi may be directed to the attention of Emily Lerner of UCLA Athletics at 310-206-3302 or elerner@athletics.ucla.edu.
