LA Galaxy Acquire Defender Todd Dunivant from Toronto FC

CARSON, Calif. (Tuesday, February 3, 2009) - The LA Galaxy today acquired defender Todd Dunivant from Toronto FC in exchange for allocation money, the club announced today. An MLS veteran who has made two appearances with the U.S. National Team, Dunivant spent a year and a half with the Galaxy, helping the club win the MLS Cup and U.S. Open Cup Double in 2005. A former star at Stanford, Dunivant began training with the Galaxy on Tuesday.

"I strongly believe that Todd will be an outstanding addition to our team and we're excited to have him returning to the LA Galaxy," said Bruce Arena, the Galaxy's General Manager and Head Coach. "I've known him for a number of years with both the National Team and New York Red Bulls and am confident that he will be able to help our club this season."

The 28-year old Colorado native is a six-year MLS veteran who has appeared in 134 games during his career while winning a pair of MLS Cup titles. Originally drafted by San Jose in the first round (sixth overall) of the 2003 MLS SuperDraft, he helped the Earthquakes win the MLS Cup as a rookie when he started all 30 of his club's regular season games. After two seasons with the Earthquakes, Dunivant was traded south to the Galaxy, and quickly entrenched himself in the club's starting XI. He played every minute of every minute of every regular season and postseason game that the club played in that season as the Galaxy won both the MLS Cup and the U.S. Open Cup.

Midway through the 2006 season, Dunivant was traded to the New York Red Bulls, where he was soon joined by Bruce Arena, who was named the Red Bulls coach in August of that year. Exactly one year later, on June 27, 2007, Dunivant was traded again, this time to Toronto FC, after appearing in 16 games for New York. He played every minute of all 18 regular season games in which he played for Toronto and scored his first goal for the club on his debut in a friendly against Aston Villa of the English Premier League. However, Dunivant, who was TFC's Humanitarian of the Year last year, was limited to a career-low nine games and 412 minutes in 2008 as a result of an ankle injury.
