Los Angeles Avengers News Release

LOS ANGELES -- Offensive lineman Matt McGhghy has signed a free agent contract with the Los Angeles Avengers, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today. He inked a two-year deal that will keep him in Los Angeles through the 2008 season.

McGhghy (6-foot-3, 320 pounds) helped the Frankfurt Galaxy win the 2006 World Bowl. As the team's starting left guard, he assisted the Galaxy in setting an NFL Europe record with 1,753 rushing yards during the 2006 season. McGhghy signed with the Detroit Lions on Jan. 20, 2006. After the Lions assigned him to NFL Europe, the Galaxy selected McGhghy in the eighth round of the NFL Allocated Player Draft.

He began his professional football career by signing a free agent contract with the Chicago Bears following the 2005 NFL Draft and remained with the club through the preseason until suffering a groin injury.

In three seasons of play at Northern Illinois University (DeKalb, Ill.), McGhghy played in 31 games, starting 26 of them at either guard or tackle. As a senior in 2004, he played in all 12 games, including a 34-21 victory over Troy in the Silicon Valley Bowl, and led the Huskies with 86 "knockdown" blocks.

Born on Jan. 26, 1982, McGhghy attended Keokuk (Iowa) High School, where he was a member of the football, basketball, baseball and track & field teams.

The Avengers will kick off their eighth season of play in the 21-year-old Arena Football League versus the San Jose SaberCats on Sunday, March 4, at STAPLES Center. The contest, which features the past two Western Division champions (Los Angeles in 2005 and San Jose in 2006), will kick off at 7 p.m.

Avenger season tickets, which include nine games played at STAPLES Center, are on sale now at 1-888-AVENGERS or online at www.laavengers.com.
