L.A. Avengers re-sign FB/LB Lonnie Ford
June 29, 2006 - Arena Football League (1987-2008) (AFL I)
Los Angeles Avengers News Release
LOS ANGELES -- Fullback/linebacker Lonnie Ford and the Los Angeles Avengers have come to an agreement on a two-year contract that will keep the veteran in Los Angeles through the 2008 season, head coach Ed Hodgkiss announced today.
Ford (6-foot-2, 260 pounds, USC) has spent all four of his seasons in the Arena Football League with the Avengers. He is the team's all-time leader in every rushing category with 500 yards and 28 touchdowns on 140 carries. Ford also has caught 14 passes for 134 yards and a touchdown. His career totals on defense include 76.5 tackles, 10 pass deflections, 5.5 quarterback sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, two blocked kicks and one interception.
"Lonnie has been with us for a long time and has proven himself as one of the top fullback/linebackers in our league," Hodgkiss said. "He's also a leader on this team and we are very excited to lock him up for two more years."
This past season, Ford rushed for 168 yards (No. 3 in the AFL) and 10 touchdowns on just 44 carries. His per carry average of 3.8 yards was the best in the league among players with 28 or more rushing attempts.
Ford has only missed four games in his four seasons with Los Angeles.
Ford's signing means that the Avengers now have 20 players on their active roster under contract. He would have become a free agent if he had not re-signed with the Avengers by Friday. Each AFL team has until June 30 to exclusively negotiate with its own players eligible for free agency.
