Kyle Guy Continues to Persevere in His Journey to the NBA

August 7, 2019 - NBA G League (G League)
Stockton Kings News Release

The two-way rookie embraces his struggles as he achieves his dreams in the Association.

Kyle Guy knows what it feels like to be on top of the world - and the bottom.

The reigning Most Outstanding Player of the Final Four and National Champion of the NCAA tournament, has had his fair share of failures to help elevate him to where he is now.

"I always say that UMBC is the best thing that ever happened to me in my basketball career because it sparked a fire. It made me go to this dark place to where I only had one way to go, and that was up," Guy says to The Ringer.

The UMBC game Guy is referring to, is when No. 1 ranked Virginia lost in the first round of the NCAA Tournament to UMBC 74-54 in 2018.

"I'm a firm believer that if we didn't lose that game, we probably don't win the National Championship," he explained. "If we don't win the National Championship and all play well, I'm probably not in this position I am in."

He is sure to note that his struggles do not define him, and he will keep pushing to achieve his goals.

"Even if I didn't get drafted, I really didn't care, because I know that I am going to make it."

Guy did get drafted, and it was to the Sacramento Kings with the 55th pick via the New York Knicks in a trade.

Just because he was drafted, doesn't mean his work is done.

Guy knew he needed to impress, and he got the job done in both the California Classic and Las Vegas Summer League.

He scored in double figures in all seven games he played in between the Vegas and Sacramento summer leagues, and averaged 16.8 points, on 38 percent shooting, in his Vegas appearance.

Kings General Manager Vlade Divac already sees Guy's skillset translating to an NBA level.

"His shooting ability is just great. That's a true NBA skill. And [to make] it into the league, you need to have one skill, and he already has that," said Divac.

The former Cavalier is still adjusting to the league, and doing what it takes to make it in the Association, but coaches and fans alike can see he is well on his way.
