BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- When Joe DeMers retired his tenth straight batter, there was a feeling things couldn't go much better for the Walla Walla Sweets. When Jesse Kuet came up with a walk-off double, there was a feeling things couldn't go much worse.

Kuet, making his debut with the Bellingham Bells, drove in the winning run in the ninth inning with a double to left-center field to lift the Bells over the Walla Walla Sweets 4-3 in their first of three games and Joe Martin Field on Tuesday.

It was an auspicious start for the Sweets (5-5) when Trevin Haseltine smashed a two-run home run with two outs in the first inning to put Walla Walla in front, but the Bells (7-3) dug in their heels, as Bellingham starter Andrew Kemmerer and Sweets right-hander Joe DeMers each faced the minimum from the third through the fifth innings. Bellingham broke through in the second inning with a single from Kuet to cut the Sweets lead in half before DeMers went to work, racking up seven strikeouts in total before the Bells broke him down in the sixth to tie the game on a single by Andrew Reichenbach.

Both teams turned to the bullpen in the seventh inning, with Bellingham bringing in Channing Nesbitt (1-0, 1.93), who got the Sweets while stranding the tying run in the seventh and eighth. Clayten Ayres got the ball for Walla Walla, throwing two scoreless innings in his return to the mound after being sidelined by a shoulder injury.

In the ninth, the Sweets got a run off Nesbitt when Jake Hazard grounded out to drive in a run from third and give Walla Walla the lead, but Travis Ulvestad (0-1, 14.53) took the mound in the ninth and put runners at second and third before being pulled for Jake Simmons, who gave up the decisive hit to Kuet.

The Sweets will send out Easton Lucas on Wednesday in the second game of the set at 7:05.
