Nashville Sounds News Release
The Nashville Sounds received their starting centerfielder (Dave Krynzel) and a strong right-handed arm for their bullpen (Justin Lehr) on Wednesday morning in the latest round of cuts by the Milwaukee Brewers.
Krynzel, who was rated as the Brewers' 10th-best prospect by Baseball America entering this season, split the 2004 campaign between Milwaukee and Triple-A Indianapolis. The speedy 23-year-old boasts a .279 career average in 484 minor league games and has recorded a double-digit stolen base total in each of his four full professional seasons.
He enjoyed an impressive spring showing for Milwaukee, batting .327 (17-for-52) with one home run, nine RBIs, and a .519 slugging percentage in 25 Cactus League games. Krynzel was optioned to Nashville so that he could play every day rather than serve as a backup with the Brewers.
Lehr -- who was acquired by the Brewers from the Oakland A's in December in exchange for veteran infielder Keith Ginter -- joins the Sounds for his third consecutive year in the Pacific Coast League. He was a member of the back-to-back defending PCL champion Sacramento River Cats (AAA-A's) each of the last two seasons.
In two seasons at the Class AAA level, Lehr has posted a 3.36 ERA (42er/112.1ip) and 17 saves in 85 relief outings. He split the 2004 campaign between Sacramento (4-2, 2.65, 13 SV) and Oakland (1-1, 5.23), ranking 6th among PCL fireman with 43 relief points in a half-season of work.
The 27-year-old right-hander went 1-0 with one save and a 4.09 ERA (5er/11.0ip) in nine Cactus League relief appearances for the Brewers this spring. He struck out one batter and walked only one batter over that stretch.
In a third move this morning, the Brewers re-assigned non-roster right-hander Julio Santana to the Nashville roster. The 32-year-old Dominican journeyman right-hander -- who has pitched in the majors for the Rangers, Devil Rays, Expos, and Tigers during his 13-year professional career -- spent the past two seasons playing in Japan for the Yomiuri Giants.
Santana enjoyed a strong winter league performance in his native Dominican Republic this off-season, posting a 2-0 record and miniscule 0.96 ERA (2er/18.2ip) in 10 appearances for Escogido. He struck out 29 batters while not issuing a single walk in his 18 2/3 innings of winter ball action.
Santana struck out 15 batters while walking only two in his nine spring innings but posted an 8.00 ERA (8er/9.0ip) in nine Cactus League relief appearances for the Brew Crew.
Spring training action continues throughout this week before minor leaguers break camp and head north next week. The 2005 Sounds Opening Day roster will be announced next Monday.
The Sounds open the 2005 season on Thursday, April 7 at Greer Stadium when new skipper Frank Kremblas leads the club into action against the New Orleans Zephyrs. Ticket packages are currently on sale. Call (615) 242-4371 or visit the Sounds' website at www.nashvillesounds.com to order or for more information.
