SURPRISE, AZ â Kansas City right-hander Runelvys Hernandez started for Omaha and took the loss in a 3-2 defeat to the Tacoma Rainiers Wednesday in Cactus League action at Surprise, Arizona. With the loss, the Royals Spring Training record drops to 2-8-2.
Hernandez shutout Tacoma through the first five innings and had a 1-0 lead entering the top of the sixth, when the Rainiers rallied for three runs. On the day, Hernandez worked five-and-two-thirds innings, allowing three runs on seven hits and three walks, while striking out five.
At the plate for Omaha, Terrence Long went 2-for-4 with a double, Jaime Jones had two singles and a walk in three trips to the plate, and Rudy Gomez smacked a leadoff homer in the seventh to close the deficit to 3-2.
The Royals next exhibition game is Thursday against the Portland Beavers at Peoria. Omaha opens its 2005 Pacific Coast League regular season on April 7th at Round Rock. The Royals host the same club in their home opener at Rosenblatt Stadium on Friday, April 15th at 7:05 p.m.
