Ottawa Renegades News Release

OTTAWA - For the second time this year, Ottawa Renegades defensive back Korey Banks has been named the Rogers-CFL Defensive Player of the Week.

Banks was given the honour a day after his 26th birthday and five days after he made a key interception that led to a 22-17 Renegades victory over Saskatchewan - a win that puts Ottawa in sole possession of first place (at 5-3) heading into a Week 9 road affair in Winnipeg Friday night.

In the win over the Roughriders, which completed a Renegades season sweep over Saskatchewan for the first time in franchise history, Banks also added two pass knockdowns and forced a fumble. The crucial play, however, was the interception - which came late in regulation. With less than five minute remaining in regulation time and the Riders driving, Banks stepped in front of a Marcus Crandell pass and took it deep into Saskatchewan territory - leading to the game winning touchdown on a Kerry Joseph run.

The 5-foot-11 Mississippi State product now has seven interceptions on the season - leading the league in the category.

Banks last won the award on August 2 - four days after the Renegades' previous win over Saskatchewan at Taylor Field in Regina.

Ottawa returns to action on Friday, August 19 against the Winnipeg Blue Bombers at Canad Inns Stadium. The Renegades return to play on their home turf on Thursday, September 8 for a Week 11 affair against the B.C. Lions at Frank Clair Stadium. Tickets are available either at the Renegades ticket office (1015 Bank Street), on the Internet (http://www.capitaltickets.ca), by phone (613.599.3267 or 877.788.3267), any Sports Experts location in the Ottawa and Gatineau regions as well as the Corel Centre Box Office in Kanata.
