Komets Open Camp on 60th Anniversary Season

Fort Wayne, IN -- The Komets opened training camp for the 60th Anniversary Season Monday at noon at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne with their annual camp kickoff press luncheon.

The Komets' camp roster of 29 players includes 19 forwards, eight defensemen and two goaltenders. Returning from last season are forwards Colin Chaulk, Danny Lapointe, Leo Thomas, Artem Podshendyalov, P.C. Drouin, and Kaleigh Schrock along with defensemen Brandon Warner, Dustin Molle and Frankie DeAngelis. Goaltender Nick Boucher will be starting his fifth straight season between the Fort Wayne pipes. Two of last year's CHL champion Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs are on the Komet roster including center Brett Smith and defenseman Jamie Milam. Milam will be making his second appearance in Fort Wayne after skating eight regular season games and five playoff games with the Komets during the 2005-06 UHL season.

Al Sims is returning for his eighth season behind the Komet bench. Sims holds the record for most games won by a Komet head coach after completing last season with 364 Fort Wayne wins. Sims will be helped on the bench by Gary Graham who is entering his fourth season as Komet assistant coach.

The Komets will be embarking on their second season in the Central Hockey League. 14 teams make up the 2011-12 version of the CHL. Each team will skate 66 games, 33 at home and 33 on the road. The Komets will be a member of the Turner Conference along with Bloomington, Dayton, Evansville, Missouri, Quad City and Rapid City. Seven teams make up the Berry Conference including Allen, Arizona, Laredo, Rio Grande Valley, Texas, Tulsa and Wichita.

Game time -- The Komets will continue with game times of 7:30pm for all home games scheduled for Mondays thru Thursdays and Saturdays. Friday home games will faceoff at 8pm and Sunday home tilts will get underway at 5pm.

Home Opener Oct. 22 -- The eight-time champion Komets will open their 60th Anniversary Season at home against the Evansville IceMen on Saturday, Oct. 22 at 7:30pm. Many events, promotions and presentations are planned for an unforgettable season. There will be recognition of former Komets throughout the year with special ceremonies, autograph sessions and photo opportunities in the Meijer Autograph Zone at home games. New members will be inducted into the Comcast Komet Hall of Fame along with exciting new endeavors both live and on the coliseum video board.

Season tickets for the 60th anniversary season continue on sale at the Komet office at 1010 Memorial Way. Two preseason games slated -- The Komets will skate two exhibition games, one on the road and one at home. Both tune-ups will be against the Dayton Gems with the first preseason tilt scheduled for Friday, Oct. 14 at Hara Arena in Dayton at 7:00pm. The Komets will reciprocate by hosting Dayton Sunday, Oct. 16 at 5pm at the Memorial Coliseum.

Friday night Marathon Nights -- Continuing this year, Friday nights will be Marathon Nights at Komet home games. Fans can take advantage of buy-one-get-one-free ticket offers for any of the 11 Friday night home games. Fill Up Cards are available at all participating Marathon stations. The first Friday night Marathon Night is Nov. 4 when the Komets host the Rapid City Rush at 8pm.

60th Anniversary Komet Hockey on WOWO -- The Komets and WOWO Radio News-Talk 1190 AM will partner once again for 2011-12. Broadcaster Bob Chase will call the action for his 59th consecutive season radio-rinkside. All games broadcast on radio, home and away, will be heard online at Xfinity KometCast . Most games will be broadcast on WOWO Radio News-Talk 1190 AM with ESPN Radio AM 1380 as an alternative when scheduling conflicts occur.

INC Soundoff with the Komets debuts tonight -- The Komets, along with Indiana's News Center and title sponsor PHP, present a new weekly televised sports program airing on Monday nights at 7:30 on WPTA TV 21 Alive beginning tonight, Oct. 10. The show will be broadcast live from Wrigley Field Bar and Grill each week during the 2011-12 season with INC's Tommy Schoegler as host. Komet players and personnel will serve as co-hosts during the half-hour program. The show will also feature highlights, interviews, call-ins and special segments. Tonight's scheduled Komet guests are head coach Al Sims and right wing Kaleigh Schrock.
