Komets announce forward Mark Smith leaving for Europe

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets announced today that forward Mark Smith has decided to accept an offer to play in Europe and is leaving the Fort Wayne UHL team immediately.

Smith, 27, is in his 6th year as a pro, started the season with the Komets. Smith makes his exit while leading the team with 17 goals while adding 12 assists for 29 points in 25 games played to date.

"Mark informed coach Puhalski this morning that he had accepted an offer to play the rest of the season in Norway. The European offer also includes a contract for next year," Komet's vice president and general manager David Franke said. "Naturally we are very disappointed to loose Mark, but he informed me that Europe is where he wants to play the rest of his career and this offer in Norway is one that he couldn't refuse."

The Komets roster shrinks to 11 forwards with 7 defensemen and 2 goaltenders for a total of 20 players going into this weekend's games.

Komets at Kalamazoo Friday, host Vipers New Year's Eve.....the Komets will skate at Kalamazoo against the Wings Friday night at 7:30 and return to Fort Wayne for the tradition Komet's New Year's Eve game against the Roanoke Valley Vipers Saturday night at 7:30.
