
Komets add five to preseason roster

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets announced the addition of 5 players to the preseason roster. Forwards Gerry Hickey, Mark Smith and Brent Rumble along with defensemen Carl Michaelson and Shawn Smith have agreed to terms and will be on the Komet's roster when training camp begins Oct. 10.
Hickey, 25, will be entering his 6th pro year after skating his last 3 seasons in the UHL. Last year Hickey skated 41 games with the Danbury Trashers before appearing in one game with Kansas City. Hickey topped the Trasher roster with a per game average of 6.44 penalty minutes per game for a total of 264 minutes in penalties on the season while scoring 2 goals and adding 4 assists. Hickey accumulated 264 minutes in 2003-04 with Lubbock of the CHL while scoring 3 goals and 9 points.
Mark Smith, who will turn 27 Sep. 28, played in Germany last season with Crimmitschau and scored 19 goals and 36 points in 45 games played. Smith has previously skated stints in the ECHL and Central Hockey League and appeared in 29 games with Knoxville during the 2001-02 UHL season.
Rumble, 26, will be entering his 3rd pro season after skating 4 years in the NCAA with Western Michigan University from 1999-2003. Last year the left winger appeared in stints with Fayetteville and Jacksonville of the SPHL and skated 2 games with Pee Dee in the ECHL.
Michaelson, 24, played 3 seasons of NCAA Division III hockey at Hobart College from 2001-2004. Last season the defenseman played 28 games with Clermont in France.
Shawn Smith, no relation to Mark Smith, skated 3 seasons with Augsburg College in the NCAA, Division 3, in 2000, 2001 and 2002.
The addition of 5 players brings the Komet preseason roster to a total of 22 players including 14 forwards, 7 defensemen and 1 goaltender. -career stats-
Komet players, current and former, skate Katrina benefit game.....current and former Komet players skated against the Fort Wayne Fire Department hockey team in a benefit game for the victims of Hurricane Katrina Sep. 7 at McMillen Ice Arena in Fort Wayne and raised a total of $5,870.09. The Fort Wayne Community Foundation matched the amount raised for a grand total of $11,740.18. The proceeds of the charity game were turned over to The American Red Cross. Skating for the Komets were Kevin St. Pierre, Colin Chaulk, Danny Stewart, Blake Stewart, P.C. Drouin, Guy Dupuis and Dustin Virag, all members of the 2005-06 Komet roster. Former Komet players playing for the Komets in the benefit game were Colin Chin, Dan Price, Paul Willet, Grant Richison, Ian Boyce, Carey Lucyk, Doug Rigler and Steve Fletcher. Former Komet Sean Venedam and current Komet Rob Guinn served as Komet coaches. Former Komets playing with the Fort Wayne Fire Department were Kevin Bertram, Jim Logan, Kelly Hurd and Parris Duffus.
Goodwin gets Hershey invitation.....Komet winger Jonathan Goodwin has been invited to the Hershey Bears (AHL) training camp. Goodwin skated his first pro season last year with the Komets netting 35 goals and 59 points in 70 games. The winger also was named a 2005 UHL All-Star and received the Komet's Rookie of the Year award for 2004-05.
Komets vs Wings in exhibition.....the Komets also announced today that they will face the Kalamazoo Wings in a home and home exhibition series prior to the start of the 2005-06 campaign. The Komets will host the Wings Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:30pm at McMillen Ice Arena in Fort Wayne. Kalamazoo with then play host for a preseason tune-up at Wings Stadium Saturday, Oct. 15 at 6:30pm (7:30pm Kalamazoo time).
