
Koch Shuts Down Cards, Mets Win 2-0

JUPITER, FL - A trio of St. Lucie Mets pitchers combined to shut out the Palm Beach Cardinals as the Mets clipped the Cardinals 2-0 on Saturday at Roger Dean Stadium.
Matt Koch threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing just three hits. Two of the hits didn't leave the infield. He walked one and struck out one.
Randy Fontanez struck out Ildemaro Vargas for the last out of the seventh and pitched a clean eighth.
Beck Wheeler pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to earn his fifth save of the season and his third save in his last three outings. Wheeler hasn't allowed a run in his last 12 innings.
The Mets strung together three consecutive opposite field singles against Cardinals starter Marco Gonzales in the second. The third hit came from Phillip Evans and it scored Eudy Pina.
The Mets added an insurance run against Mitch Harris in the seventh when Dilson Herrera singled home Albert Cordero to complete the scoring at 2-0.
Gonzales, the No. 5 prospect in the Cardinals system, struck out seven hitters in six innings and gave up one run in the loss.
Evans and Herrera had two hits apiece for the Mets.
Koch has not allowed a run in his last two starts which spans 11 2/3 innings. He has won his last three starts.
St. Lucie took three of four in the series against Palm Beach, winning the final three games. The Mets enter Sunday's league-wide off day alone in first place in the Florida State League South Division with a 21-15 record.
The Mets welcome the Tampa Yankees to Tradition Field on Monday for a four-game series to begin interleague play in the FSL. First pitch is at 6:30 p.m. Kids 12 and under get in free.
