Corvallis Knights News Release
Center fielder Kyle Nobach scored on a two-out wild pitch in the last of the 10th inning on Sunday to give Corvallis a 9-8 victory over Cowlitz in the rubber game of their spirited WCL series.
Nobach, who entered the game in the eighth inning as a defensive replacement, doubled to center with one out in the 10th. He moved to third on a groundout by Scott Ogrin (Cal Poly in 2017), and scored when Cowlitz reliever Kenyon Yovan unleashed a wild pitch on a 2-2 count to Taylor Travess (Mt. Hood).
The Knights (29-14 all, 22-14 WCL, 4-5 second half) ended a streak of series losses at two in a row. They overcame five errors that led to five unearned runs.
Ogrin had two hits, scored twice and stole a base while extending his hitting streak to seven games. He is hitting .409 (9-22) over that span, with four RBIs.
There were three lead changes and three ties in the see-saw battle, which took 3:49 to complete. The Knights led 2-0, trailed 6-2, led 7-6, and trailed 8-7 before they forced extra innings by scoring once in the ninth. Andy Atwood (Oregon State) walked, stole second and third, and scored on a base hit by OSU teammate Zak Taylor.
Taylor doubled, singled, walked and had two RBIs. First baseman Roman Garcia (San Diego) doubled, singled and had an RBI and right fielder Cody Hawken (Portland) singled twice and scored.
Tanner Howell (Dixie State), the fourth pitcher for the Knights, twirled a scoreless 10th and earned his first win of the season.
The crowd of 2,948 was the third-largest of the season. The only bigger gatherings were 3,407 for the July 2 Fireworks Night, and 3,083 for the annual June 1 SEAS field day.
The Knights are idle on Monday, their first off day since June 26, and are off again on Tuesday for the WCL All-Star Game at Cowlitz. They resume WCL action at Gresham on Wednesday; their next home is Saturday against Victoria, the North Division first-half champion.
