Bellingham Bells News Release
The Bells rode a big first inning to a 6-3 victor over the Walla Walla Sweets Saturday night.
The Bells bats started hot tonight, putting up 4 runs in the first inning. Andru Cardenas was hit by a pitch to give the Bells their first runner of the game, Shane Hanon then promptly lined a double down the left field line to score Cardenas all the way from first. Chase Strumpf then singled and David Banuelos walked to load the bases. Danny Casals then roped a two RBI single to center field to increase the Bells' lead to 3-0. After an Elijah Skipps walk, Matt DiLeo ripped a single to left to score Banuelos from third, and the 1st inning ended with the score at 4-0 Bells.
The Sweets got a run back in the top of the 2nd when Nick Nyquist launched a solo homer into the parking lot in left. But the Bells immediately struck back for a run of their own in the bottom of the inning. Andru Cardenas got things started once again with a bloop single to center. A sac bunt from Shane Hanon and a groundout moved Cardenas 3rd. David Banuelos then drove Cardenas in with groundball back up the middle to move the score to 5-1 Bells.
The Sweets picked up another run in the top of the 4th. A one out hit by pitch ended up coming around to score on Griffin Mazur's RBI single to left. That made the score 5-2 Bells. The Bells manufactured a run as well in the 7th. Cardenas got things started again with a walk and a stolen base. Shane Hanon then laid down another sac bunt to move him to third, and Chase Strumpf drove him in with a sac fly to center. The Sweets added a run in the top of the 8th as well. A leadoff single and some creative base running from the sweets led to a run, and the score moving to the bottom of the 8th was 6-3 Bells.
Bells pitching was great tonight as Tyler Palm, Spencer Howard, Zach Johnson, and Sam Hellinger combined to allow only 3 runs on 5 hits while striking out 7 Walla Walla batters.
The Bells take the field again tomorrow Sunday July 16th for their final game of the three game series against the Walla Walla Sweets at 3:05. Pre-game coverage starts at 2:35 on 930 AM KBAI with Tom Prizeman. To purchase tickets visit http://bellinghambells.com/home/ or call (367) 527-1035.
