Bellingham Bells News Release
The Bells won a pitcher's duel on Sunday afternoon, beating the Walla Walla Sweets by a score of 2-0.
The Bells got on the board quickly, scoring 2 runs in the first inning. Andru Cardenas led things off with a walk and a stolen base to reach 2nd, Shane Hanon then stepped up and ripped a double in the left center gap to score Cardenas and give the Bells the early lead at 1-0. Chase Strumpf then bunted Hanon over to 3rd and David Banuelos hit a sac fly to right to drive him in and give the Bells the early 2-0 lead.
After the first inning the scoring stopped and pitching and defense was key for the Bells all day. Jon Olsen got the start for the Bells and was brilliant. He picked up the win by going 7.1 innings while only allowing 3 hits and 0 runs, while striking out 4. Jared Horn pitched the rest of the eighth with no hits, and Sam Hellinger came in and tossed a perfect ninth to earn the save.
The defense stepped up big time as well. There was a slick double play turned by Chase Strumpf and Gunnar Schubert to get Olsen out of the 4th inning unscathed. The infield all around was on point all game and were vacuuming up balls left and right. There was some great play in the outfield as well with Elijah Skipps making a sliding catch in left and Shane Hanon running down a couple balls in the gap including a diving play.
Hanon was also the hitting star for the Bells on the day, as he collected 2 of the Bells 3 hits on the afternoon, and drove in one run and scored the other for the Bells.
The win also gave the Bells the series win over the Sweets on the weekend, they took 2 out of 3.
