Soo Greyhounds News Release
The 68th game of the regular season was put in the books in a game with no implications for either side. With the Hounds clinching the Western Conference's 6th seed on Saturday Night, and London holding 1st overall, both opted to to take substantially different line-ups into their 4th meeting of the year.
Hounds OA Captain Colin Miller along with Andrew Fritsch, Chris Buonomo and Ryan Sproul watched from the stands while Kyle Jenkins (Oakville Blades, OJHL) and Nick Pastorious (Soo Thunderbirds, NOJHL) were recalled for the game. For Jenkins, it marked his debut in the OHL.
London entered with nine regulars out of the line-up.
Just over a minute into the game three Hounds found themselves all alone in the London zone after a strong effort to keep the puck inside but failed to get a shot on goal.
The Knights would open the scoring on their first powerplay of the night.
Following a battle behind the net, Brett Welychka was found out front and put the put over a downed JUSTIN NICHOLS at 8:06 for a 1-0 lead.
Over the next eleven minutes it would be the visitors with the best opportunities but Nichols kept the Hounds close making seven saves in the period.
Early in the second, and while on a 5-on-3, London's Kyle Platzer jumped on the rebound and netted the Knights a 2-0 lead.
The Hounds killed off a 58 second two man advantage and remaining time on the London powerplay in a sequence that saw the Hounds handed three consecutive penalties.
Corey Pawley made it a three-goal game when he skated out of the corner unchallenged and untouched at 8:33 to make it a 3-0 London lead.
After generating a number of quality chances earlier in the game, NICK COUSINS would put the Hounds on the board late in the period.
A left-point shot by KEVIN SPINOZZI was redirected in front by BRANDON ALDERSON and as it squeaked through the legs of Jake Patterson, Cousins ensured it crossed the line for his 27th goal of the season.
Hounds trailed 3-1 after two periods.
The London lead was then cut to a single goal with the Hounds on the powerplay.
Standing to the left of Patterson, MICHAEL SCHUMACHER took the rebound off the left pad of the London keeper before going upstairs for his 20th goal of the year, making it a 3-2 game. JARED MCCANN and DARNELL NURSE picked up the assists.
The visitors would round out the games scoring though when Brett Welycha on the powerplay at 7:49, Ryan Hamelin (his first OHL goal) at 12:12 and Jacob Jammes at 17:58 converted to pace London to the 6-2 victory.
Despite outshooting London in the loss (32-28), the Hounds finish the regular season with a record of 36-26-3-3.
In their last 29 games the Hounds have went 23-12-1-3 on the year.
The slate is now wiped clean as the club prepares for their Western Conference Quarter-Final series with the Owen Sound Attack.
"I think it's obviously to take some time to regroup and understand it's a whole new season for us. We can put everything behind us at this stage, whether it's positive, negative, everything we have faced with this season it's all done with. Everything is reset to zero and we all get to start fresh again" explained Hounds Head Coach Sheldon Keefe when asked post-game about the preparation heading into Game 1 this week.
The Hounds head out on the road for the first two games of the series beginning this coming Thursday, March 21st - 7 p.m. from Owen Sound.
Pre-game action begins on Rock 101 starting at 6:30 p.m.
