Charlotte Knights News Release
(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - Chris Beck led a trio of Charlotte Knights pitchers in a combined four-hit shutout of the Louisville Bats in a 4-0 victory on Tuesday night. The win was the fourth consecutive for the Knights, tying their season high and putting the team in a tie for first place in the International League South Division.
Beck (2-1, 3.90) was impressive in his first start since returning to the Knights from his first major league call-up, spinning six innings of one-hit baseball. The 24-year-old also struck out five in the game and earned the second win in his last two starts in a Knights uniform.
The Knights took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning when Tyler Colvin - who had doubled to lead-off the inning - scored on a Jason Coats two-out RBI-single. The single was one of two for Coats in the game, marking the third multi-hit effort in his last four games and raising his batting average to .318 on the season.
Knights DH Dan Black delivered the big hit in the bottom of the fourth inning, a three-run home run off of Bats starter Donovan Hand (0-1, 3.06). The homer was Black's sixth of the season, tying him with Knights third baseman Matt Davidson and two other players for the International League lead.
LHP Eric Surkamp relieved Beck in the seventh inning and allowed two hits over two innings of work. The NC State product also struck out two Bats in the game, and now has 14 strikeouts over his last 10.0 innings pitched.
Knights closer Jairo Asencio entered the game in the ninth inning and shut the door on the Bats, completing the second shutout by the Knights this season.
The Charlotte Knights (18-13) and Louisville Bats (13-19) will play game three of their four-game series on Wednesday as RHP Junior Guerra is set to take the mound and face-off against RHP Josh Smith. First pitch is scheduled for 12:05 p.m. and gates will open at 11:00 a.m. for Day Baseball at BB&T Ballpark.
