FORT MILL, S.C. - Gwinnett built an early lead and held off a late Charlotte rally to win 5-4 in front of 9,645 fans.

The Braves scored first in the top of the 1st on Kelly Johnson's RBI sacrifice fly for a 1-0 lead. Gwinnett added another run in the 2nd with a Van Pope RBI single to left, making it 2-0. Charlotte got on the board in the 2nd, when Knights All-Star catcher Cole Armstrong hit a solo home run-his seventh-to pull within one run. Gwinnett's Pope then stole home in the top of third increasing the Braves lead to 3-1.

After Charlotte added a run in the 6th and leading 3-2, the Braves tried to put the game away on a Alvin Colina 2-run homer in the top of the 8th, increasing their lead to 5-2.

In the bottom half of the same inning, the Knights scored a pair of runs, including an RBI single to center by Armstrong closing the gap, 5-4. But the Knights rally fell short in the 9th and the Braves held on to win.

The series between the Braves and Knights concludes tomorrow. RHP Jeff Marquez (1-7, 10.35) will start for the Knights. RHP Jo-Jo Reyes (0-1, 5.63) will take the mound for the Braves. Game time is 12:15 p.m.
