*WHAT'S ON DECK*
END OF THE ROAD-The Red Wings begin a short two-game homestand tonight with the first game of a two-game series vs. Lehigh Valley. Rochester will Lehigh Valley tonight and Sunday before breaking for the 2009 All-Star break July 13-15. Rochester will return to action on Thursday, July 16th when they start a four-game road trip in Lehigh Valley. Rochester will play in Lehigh Valley Thursday-Sunday before returning to Frontier Field on Monday, July 20th.
DRINKS ARE ON ME!-For the sixth consecutive season the Rochester Red Wings will enjoy a three-day All-Star break. This is only the eighth three-day All-Star break (2004-2009, 1999 and 1996) Rochester has had since they began playing the Triple-A All-Star game in 1988 (22 years).
*WHAT'S NEWS*
STARTING TO TURN IT AROUND-The Red Wings starting pitchers have done a nice job the last 24 games, going 10-9 with a 3.95 ERA. In 150.1 innings of work, the starters have allowed 77 runs (66 earned) on 170 hits while walking only 43 while striking out 95. The Red Wings starters had just an 11-25 record with a 4.88 ERA in the first 62 games of the season. Since June 10th the Wings pitching staff has seen its team ERA drop from 4.75 to 4.38.
I LOVE A (HIT) PARADE-The Red Wings offense is heating up the last eight games batting .301 (82-for-272) as a team. Rochester has 12 or more hits in four of the eight games. The Red Wings offense has heated up in July batting .301 (92-for-306) as a team and is averaging 5.2 runs per game.
HOT WING-Outfielder Jason Pridie has a five-game hitting streak batting .478 (11-for-23) with three doubles, two home runs, six RBI, and five runs scored. Pridie has hit safely in six of his last seven games batting .438 (14-for-32) with four doubles, one triple, three home runs, nine RBI and eight runs scored.
I HAVE A DREAM....A WILD CARD DREAM-The Red Wings will go into the All-Star break trailing wild card leader Norfolk/Durham. Rochester currently trails Norfolk/Durham by 6.0 games in the wild card race. The last time an IL team trailed by 6.0 or more games at the All-Star break and came back to win the IL wild card spot was Scranton in 2001. Scranton had a 44-47 record at the break, trailing Buffalo by 12.5 games in the division. In the wild card race they trailed Ottawa by 7.0 games (as well as Indianapolis by 2.5 games, Syracuse by 0.5 game and tied with Charlotte). Scranton finished the season 78-65, winning the wild card by 4.5 games over Durham and finishing 11.5 games better than Ottawa.
HERE COMES THE SUN-Rochester looks to finish the pre All-Star break home schedule (two home dates remaining) with just one rainout. The Red Wings will have 25 home dates remaining after the break and with any luck Rochester looks to have their second consecutive season with only one postponement the entire season. In 2008 the Red Wings played 71 of their 72 openings at Frontier Field which is the closest the Red Wings have come to playing their entire home schedule without a rainout since 1980 when day-to-day records began.
BREAK ME OFF A WINNING RECORD-The Red Wings need to win their final two games before the All-Star break to clinch their fifth winning record at the All-Star break in the last six years (2008 Wings were 45-54 at the Break). Last season Rochester played 99 games prior to the All-Star break which was the most games the Red Wings have played prior to an All- Star break since 1988 when the Triple-A All-Star game was introduced.
