WCL Yakima Valley Pippins

Knights' Offense Steals the Series at the Orchard

Yakima Valley Pippins News Release

YAKIMA, Washington - After the Yakima Valley Pippins took their 2023 home opener with a walk-off win, the Corvallis Knights responded with two dominating wins at Yakima County Stadium, including Thursday's 8-1 victory.

The Knights plated a pair of runs in the third, fourth and fifth innings, and the Pippins never recovered.

Early, though, a stellar defensive play kept the game scoreless. With the bases loaded and no outs in the second for Corvallis, Knights catcher Cameron Rowe served a fly ball to Hank Dunn in center for the first out. Blake Avila, who opened the inning with a walk, tagged and tried to score on the play, but Dunn fired a strike to the plate, and catcher Matt Chavez applied the tag for the double play.

It was Dunn's second assist on the young season.

The Pippins scored their lone run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Maxim Fullerton.

The Knights collected 14 hits in the contest, with five players finishing with a multiple-hit game.

Yakima Valley's Payton Graham had a productive day in relief of starter Jaydon Tomas, tossing 3.2 innings and giving up just four hits and no earned runs. He also had three strikeouts.

Mike Woodward collected two of the Pippins' five hits.

The Pippins continue their seven-game homestand, hosting the Bend Elks in a three-game set beginning Friday evening. First pitch is at 6:35 p.m. Friday on Tieton Cider Works Night, with a souvenir giveaway for the first 500 fans.
