Charleston Swamp Foxes News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC â Red-hot rookie quarterback Johnny Turman threw for three team records and six passing scores, but it wasn't enough as the Macon Knights ended the Charleston Swamp Foxes two-game winning streak 56-46 Saturday night in front of 4,162 fans.
Charleston (5-6) led early 20-7 but back-to-back Knight scores, including a 26-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown propelled Macon to the lead midway through the second quarter.
The Swamp Foxes held close down the stretch, but an additional back-to-back scoring barrage by the Knights to end third and start the fourth quarter sealed the Foxes fate.
Turman's trio of single-game records came in pass attempts and completions, going 31-for-51 for the single-game and North Charleston Coliseum record of 350 yards, 198 of which came in the first half. Turman broke his own record in attempts and yards, but surpassed former Fox John Craven, who held the record of 26 completions set a 51-46 loss at Tallahassee on June 9, 2000.
A pair of Charleston veterans paced the way offensively for the Foxes. Leroy McFadden and Mike Chandler both hauled in three receiving touchdowns, while McFadden rumbled for one score on the ground. McFadden finished with seven catches for 87 yards receiving. McFadden was named the Ironman of the Game in the loss.
Chandler, who entered the game needing just eight points to become the Swamp Foxes all-time leading scorer, tallied 18 on the night with his trio of scores. He moved into first on the list with his second TD of the night, a seven-yard scoring strike from Turman at the 6:25 mark of the third quarter that pulled the Foxes to within two at 35-33.
Another pair of Swamp Foxes reached personal milestones in the loss. Veterans Michael Brown and Antoine Calloway both reached the 100-catch mark in their respective Charleston careers. Brown tallied two catches for 39 yards while Calloway, in only his second game back with Charleston, hauled in five balls for 48 yards.
Offensive Player of the Game Jacques Rumph led the Macon attack. He tallied 10 catches for 92 yards and four touchdowns to lead all receivers in the game. Quarterback Jermaine Alfred completed 20-of-32 passes for 195 yards and five TDs, also tossing a pair of picks.
The Swamp Foxes will look to get back on track next Saturday night as they travel to face Atlantic Divison rival, the Cape Fear Wildcats in a crucial match-up. Game time is set for 7:30 pm and the game can be heard locally on ESPN Radio, 1340 AM.
