Knighthawks: Win And They're In The Playoffs
April 24, 2010 - National Lacrosse League (NLL)
Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Everett, Washington)... A laptop set atop the equipment manager's with its screen turned to the wall. Occasionally players and coaches would spin it around to check out the score of the Buffalo-Boston game. At 9:40 p.m. EST, the Rochester Knighthawks learned that they must win to get into the 2010 Champion's Cup Playoffs, following Buffalo's 13-10 victory.
Now it's Boston's turn to wait as they need a Knighthawks loss to become the eighth and final team to advance to the postseason. Rochester takes on the Washington Stealth tonight at 10:30 p.m. The game will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and thezone941.com.
The Knighthawks (7+8) come into the game after dropping a 15-7 decision to the Toronto Rock on April 16th. Rochester is now one half game behind the 8-8 Boston Blazers. A Knighthawks win forces a three-way tie for the final two spots in the East Division. In that case, Buffalo and Rochester clinch, while Boston would miss the playoffs. In the first tiebreaker, head to head matchups, Buffalo and Rochester would each be a combined 3-2 vs. the other two teams in the tiebreaker, where Boston would be 1-3. Rochester and Buffalo then go the next step of record against divisional opponents, where Buffalo would be 7-5 to Rochester's 6-6. Buffalo wins the tiebreaker. The tiebreaker is then re-applied to Boston and Rochester. The teams split the season series 1-1. Rochester wins on the next step of the tiebreaker with a record against the Eastern Division of 6-6 to Boston's 4-7 for the season.
Washington enters the contest in first place in the West Division with a 10-5 record. Washington has already locked up a playoff berth and the Western Division regular season title. The Stealth can also secure the top overall seed in the playoffs with a win and an Orlando loss. The game is the first ever meeting between the two teams. This offseason, the Stealth moved from San Jose to Everett, Wash.
The 2010 NLL Playoffs will begin the weekend of April 30th to May 2nd and will take place over three consecutive weekends. The winners advance to the Eastern and Western Divisional Finals the weekend of May 7th to 9th. The 2010 NLL Championship Game will be played the weekend of May 14th to 16th.
