Rochester Knighthawks News Release
(Rochester, NY)... Rochester Knighthawks Owner and General Manager Curt Styres announced today that the team has traded Matt Zash to the Philadelphia Wings for a fifth-round pick in the 2011 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. In a related move, the Knighthawks activated Holdon Vyse from the practice squad. The moves are pending league approval.
Vyse, pronounced VICE, signed a one-year deal with the Knighthawks on January 26, 2011. The 22 year old was originally the Buffalo Bandits' fourth-round selection (37th overall) in the 2010 NLL Entry Draft.
"He played for us all the way through junior and had a tryout with the Bandits," said Styres when he signed Vyse. "He can play defense and transition, is a hard hitter, and finishes his checks."
The Six Nations product played Senior "A" ball for Langley and Coquitlam in the Western Lacrosse Association this summer. He was also a member of the Ohsweken Aces that captured the Nations Cup. The defenseman, who can play transition, also recorded 33 points in 11 Senior "B" games for North Shore.
In his junior career, he has 29 goals and 68 assists in 96 games with Six Nations. He was a Second Team All-Pro in the Junior "A" circuit, won four straight Ontario Championships (2004-07) and captured the 2007 Minto Cup. Holdon is the brother of Buffalo Bandits' forward Roger Vyse.
Zash played in four games and recorded one assist and 18 loose balls with the Knighthawks. The Massapequa, NY, native is in his fourth season in the NLL and has averaged nearly a point per game in 35 games and has collected 176 loose balls. This summer, he was won 2010 with Team USA at the FIL World Lacrosse Championships. Zash played his college lacrosse at Duke University where he was a two-time All-American. He was acquired by Rochester on October 27, 2010 in a four-player, four-draft deal with the Colorado Mammoth.
The Knighthawks will travel to Buffalo for their first of three games against the Bandits tonight at 7:30 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on The Zone 94.1 FM and www.thezone941.com. The game will also be televised on Time Warner Cable Channel 26.
