Rochester Knighthawks News Release

The Rochester Knighthawks announced today that they have activated defenseman/transition man Brad Gillies for Saturday's season opener against the Colorado Mammoth.

"It was a great feeling," said Gillies about when he was informed by Owner and General Manager Curt Styres. "I knew I was one step closer to making the pro lacrosse dream a reality."

Gillies joined the Knighthawks after being selected with the ninth overall selection in the 2015 National Lacrosse League Entry Draft. He was drafted by Rochester, following a stellar summer season with the Oakville Rock of Major Series Lacrosse. Gillies is part of a youth movement on the Knighthawks' defense, as he is one of four rookies on the back end.

Knighthawks head coach Mike Hasen was impressed with the play of the first-year pro during preseason and in practice. When Dylan Evans was placed on the physically unable to perform list, Gillies was rewarded by being promoted to the 20-man active roster.

"He brings a lot of energy," said Hasen. "We expect him to battle for loose balls off the faceoffs. On the other side of the ball, he brings his speed to the transition game. He is going to help us and take some pressure off 'Soupy' (Scott Campbell), clearing the ball over the restraining line."

The 24-year-old played his college ball locally at RIT and was a four-year standout under head coach and former Knighthawk Jake Coon. At RIT, he posted 27 goals, 70 assists and 97 points in 83 games from 2012-15. The former Division III All-American will now have an opportunity to play lacrosse in the city where he has already experienced so much success.

"I'm very excited," said Gillies. "Being able to get out there and play in front of these great hometown fans is an amazing opportunity."

The Oakville, Ontario native will have a huge cheering section Saturday, with his family making the trip down to Connors & Ferris Field at The Blue Cross Arena. He will also have the support of his alma mater, where he now works as an assistant men's lacrosse coach.

"I should have a good showing for sure," he said. "My mom, dad and brother will be there as well as a good group of friends."
