Edenton Steamers News Release
EDENTON, N.C - Adam Kirsch and Josh Hampton both flashed the long ball power as the Edenton Steamers (20-6) defeated the Morehead City Marlins (11-16) 7-2 at Historic Hicks Field on Friday night.
John Williams (George Mason University), relief pitcher turned starter for Edenton, made his second start and sixth appearance overall. On the other side of the diamond for the Morehead City Marlins Justin Taylor made his fifth start.
Williams, out of the gate, struggled with his command and Dylan Brown sliced a lead-off double to begin the ball game. After a strikeout, Jacob Hoyle slapped his third home run of the season over the right-centerfield wall to give Morehead City an early 2-0 lead.
Williams settled down and retired the Marlins one, two, three in the top of the second and then pulled his best Houdini impression in the top of the fourth and fifth innings.
With two outs in the fourth inning Williams relinquished two singles before getting Jeff Kammer to ground out to end the threat. In the fifth, two singles and a walk loaded the bases with Chase McDonald coming up. McDonald is one of the top Marlin hitters and was the 2011 CPL Offensive Player of the Year. Williams induced the weak ground ball to third base to end the threat there as well.
Edenton, in the bottom of the third against Taylor, claimed the lead. Nick Thompson (East Carolina University) led-off with a double. Two outs and three batters later, Josh Hampton (Wilmington University) walked and Adam Kirsch (Texas Tech University) connected with his second home run of the season, a three-run blast to give Edenton a 3-2 lead.
Morehead City went to the bullpen and in came William Prince. Prince, courtesy of a single and an error that put runners on the corners, allowed a run to come home on Thompson's sacrifice fly to make it 4-2 Steamers. Two batters later, Nick Miller (University of Northern Colorado) knocked in another run for a 5-2 lead and Hampton turned his seven game hitting streak into an eight game hitting streak; blasting his third home run of the season for a 7-2 Steamers lead.
The field was cleared in between the top and bottom of the fifth inning due to lightening and the impending rain and was never resumed after a 27 minute rain delay.
Williams improves to 2-0 on the season while Taylor falls to 1-3 for Morehead City. For Edenton, it's the second time they have been victorious in a five-inning, rain-shortened game and it becomes their 20th win of the season; the first team in the CPL to eclipse the 20-win mark.
The Petersburg Generals come to town tomorrow for a scheduled double header that will officially wrap up the first half of the CPL season.
The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league.
