Edenton Steamers News Release

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C - The Fayetteville SwampDogs scored a run in the bottom of the ninth and another run in the bottom of the tenth to earn the 3-2 come-from-behind win over the Edenton Steamers in extra innings on Thursday night at J.P Riddle Stadium.

A night after clinching the Coastal Plain League's First-Half East Division Title, the Steamers pulled into J.P Riddle Stadium for the one and only time during the first half to take on the second-place Fayetteville SwampDogs.

Nick Thompson (East Carolina University), on the second pitch of the game, sliced a double down the right field line and three batters later, with two outs, Josh Hampton singled him home to give Edenton and their starter Eric Peterson (Temple University) the early 1-0 lead.

Fayetteville knotted the score the very next inning when Michael Timm singled and stole second base. Timm moved to third base when Ryan Nagle struck out, but reached base on a Peterson wild pitch. Chad Whitehead hit into a six-four-three double play that brought home Timm to tie the score at 1-1 after two frames.

Edenton put runners on in every inning until finally breaking through against 'Dogs starter Garrett Baugh again in the top of the fifth. Sam Bumpers (Lamar University) reached on a beautiful infield bunt single. Alex Delgado (Emmanuel College) dropped a sacrifice bunt down and then Thompson moved Bumpers to third with a groundout. He came home to give Edenton a 2-1 lead when Laz Villa (Reedley College) hit a two-out single.

The SwampDogs, after scoring in the second, picked up only one hit and two walks until the bottom of the ninth.

They were able to take their starter Garrett Baugh, who pitched beautifully for eight innings, allowing only seven hits and two runs; he walked a batter and struck out four, off the hook.

Peterson pitched four innings for the Steamers and allowed two hits, one run (earned); he walked two and struck out three, departing with a no decision.

Rohn Pierce (Canisius College) entered the game in the fifth and didn't allow a hit to Fayetteville until the bottom of the ninth. Pierce had faced the minimum number of hitters through his four innings until Mitchell Kranson singled to begin the home half of the ninth.

Fayetteville then sacrificed the pinch runner Chase Rader to second base. Rader then moved to third on the Derek Gibson ground out and scored on Micheal Timm's two-out single to tie it 2-2 in the bottom of the ninth.

After Edenton stranded a runner in the top of the tenth, Fayetteville took advantage of their momentum and was able to earn the walk-off win. Chad Whitehead singled and moved to second on a passed ball in the tenth and then Daniel Nevarez struck out against Jeremy Bales (Lee University).

The Steamers went to the bullpen again and out came Beau Beaudreau (Flagler College), who allowed an RBI, game-winning single to Bill Bereszniewicz, who entered the game in the eighth inning.

Jeremy Bales took his first loss of the season falling to 1-1 and Travis Hissong earned the win, improving to 1-1 for his two innings of shutout relief.

Edenton comes home to Edenton to play the Morehead City Marlins tomorrow night and then plays a double header against Petersburg on Saturday to wrap up the first half.
