Ottawa Renegades News Release
OTTAWA â The Ottawa Renegades are pleased to announce the signing of two players selected during the 2004 Canadian College Draft, defensive lineman Matt Kirk and wide receiver Christian Heffernan, to one-year contracts with a club option for the 2005 season.
Kirk, from Queen's University in Kingston, and Heffernan, from the University of Western Ontario in London, Ontario, share the distinction of being the only players drafted by the Renegades from their respective schools.
Heffernan, 25, is an outstanding athlete with great speed. The 6-foot-3, 200-pound graduate of St. Thomas Aquinas High School in London played baseball in a youth and was drafted by the Atlanta Braves.
After playing three seasons of minor-league baseball in the Braves' chain, Heffernan returned to Canada and enrolled at Western where he has competed in track and football. He was named Western's male athlete of the year in March following an outstanding athletic 2003-2004 season in which he was captain of the Mustangs football team and, in February, anchored the school's 4x400 metre team to a Canadian Interuniversity Sport (CIS) indoor record.
Heffernan, drafted in the sixth round (47th overall) by the Renegades during the 2004 Canadian College Draft, has one more year of athletic eligibility remaining in the CIS.
Kirk, 22, is a Kingston native who was named the 2003 Ontario University Athletics (OUA) lineman of the year, to the conference first all-star team at defensive tackle, and the second all-star team in CIS.
The Renegades selected the 6-foot-4, 246-pound Kirk in the fifth round (38th overall) during the draft.
