Kinston Indians News Release
· Try to Understand I'm a Magic Man...Ryan Mulhern's two-out, two-strike RBI single in the bottom of the eighth inning yesterday snapped a 1-1 tie and led the Indians to a 2-1 victory over Myrtle Beach. The win also trimmed Kinston's magic number to clinch the first-half title to five (Winston-Salem beat Wilmington 4-2 to stay two games out of first). Frederick also won yesterday, keeping the Keys alive in the Northern Division race. Lynchburg's magic number to clinch the North is one, and the possibility exists that both the Indians and Hillcats could clinch on the same night. How cool would that be?
· Decisions, Decisions...With two out and a runner on second in the bottom of the eighth inning yesterday, Myrtle Beach manager Randy Ingle was presented with the following conundrum: Did he let his right-handed reliever Ricardo Rodriguez face hot-hitting but right-handed Ryan Mulhern, or did he walk Mulhern to face the slumping but left-handed Mike Conroy? Ingle opted to pitch to Mulhern, but the plan backfired when Mulhern lined the game-winning single to right field on an 0-2 pitch. Mulhern is hitting .343 (12-35) with five home runs, 10 runs scored and 11 RBI in 11 games since coming off the DL June 2. Conroy, meanwhile, is hitting .164 and just broke out of an 0-28 slump with two hits Saturday.
· A Study in Contrasts...This series with Lynchburg features the offense of the Hillcats against the pitching and defense of the Indians. Lynchburg leads the Carolina League in team batting average (.286) and walks (287), and ranks second in hits (595) and runs scored (354). The K-Tribe pitching staff however, is second in the league in wins (36), ERA (3.75), hits allowed (513) and has surrendered the fewest number of walks (176) in the league.
· Indulge Me...Earlier today, my beloved Baylor Bears made the College World Series for the first time since 1978. So go ahead and put your right hand in the air, curl your fingers into a claw, swing your arm down and yell "Sic âem Bears!"
