Kinston Comes From Behind To Take Game Two

The Frederick Keys had some opportunites, but in the end, it was the Kinston Indians who came out on top in game two, by a final score of 7-5.

It was all Keys through the front three frames. In the bottom of the first, Frederick C Matt Wieters reached on a two-out infield single. RF Brandon Tripp followed that up with a two-run homer, a laser-shot to right-center field that gave the Keys an early 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Frederick struck again. DH Brandon Snyder led things off with an infield single. SS Ryan McCarthy and CF Danny Figueroa then hit back-to-back singles to load the bases. LF Chris Amador hit a sac fly to drive in Snyder, and extend the Keys lead to three.

In his first start of the season, RHP Zach Clark pitched very well through the first three innings. Eight of the nine batters he retired were via the groundball out. In the top half the fourth, Indians 3B Jared Goedert finally got to Clark, hitting a solo homerun, and making it a 3-1 ball game. Clark's night was done after the fourth. He pitched four innings, and allowed one run one four hits. He got the no decision.

In the bottom of the fourth, Frederick loaded the bases with two men out. Wieters came to the plate, with a chance to break the game open, but fouled out to third to end the threat, and shift the momentum towards Kinston.

Keys LHP Ryan Rodriguez came in to relieve Clark in the fifth. the first batter he faced, RF Cirilo Cumberbatch, reached on an error on 3B Billy Rowell. The Indians then put together back-to-back-to-back hits, scoring two runs, and tying the game at three.

Kinston took the lead in the top of the sixth. With two men out, new Keys reliever Scott Mueller surrendered a walk to C Brian Juhl. The next batter, 2B Adam Davis, hit a two-run homer to give the K-Tribe a 5-3 lead.

Each club tacked on two runs in the eighth inning to make the final score 7-5. Jeanmar Gomez got the win, improving to 1-4. Mueller was credited with the loss, dropping to 0-1. Josh Tomlin pitched a perfect ninth to pick up his first save of the season.
