
Kingston third period outburst the difference in 7-5 victory over Plymouth

PLYMOUTH TOWNSHIP - The Kingston Frontenacs scored twice in a span of 1:53 early in the third period to extend a 4-3 lead to 6-3 and the Frontenacs went on to defeat the Plymouth Whalers, 7-5, in an Ontario Hockey League game played Friday night before 3,352 fans at the Compuware Sports Arena.
The near-sellout is the best crowd of the season for Plymouth in 12 home dates.
In spite of the loss, Plymouth (now 12-7-1-1) lost no ground at the top of the OHL's West Division as Saginaw lost, 5-3, to Brampton on Friday. Plymouth and Saginaw are on top of the OHL West Division, each with 26 points.
Cory Emmerton led the Kingston attack with two goals and an assist as the game's first star. Former Michigan State player Peder Skinner scored twice as the game's second star. Todd Griffith, Andrew Wilson, and Radek Smolenak added singles for Kingston.
Dan Collins led Plymouth with a pair of goals and an assist an now has a team-leading 18 goals on the season. Andrew Fournier (7th of the year), Vaclav Meidl (5th) and John Vigilante (8th) all scored single goals for Plymouth.
After Collins scored a power play goal to opening the scoring at 11:09 of the first period, Kingston scored a pair of power play goals of their own later in the first period by Griffith (12:57) and Emmerton (18:45).
Fournier tied the game at 2-2 for Plymouth at 0:23 of the second period, but Kingston came right back at 1:51 of the period on Wilson's first-ever OHL goal. Skinner extended the Frontenacs' lead to 4-2 at 6:03 of the period, but Collins came back to cut the Kingston lead to 4-3 at 6:53 of the second frame.
Smolenak scored his 11th goal of the season at 1:11 of the third period and Skinner scored a short-handed game-winning goal at 3:04 of the period to give Kingston a 6-3 lead.
Danny Taylor played the entire game in goal for Kingston, stopping 36 of 41 Plymouth shots. Ryan Nie started in goal for Plymouth and stopped 30 of 35 Kingston shots. Rookie Jeremy Smith (Brownstown) made his OHL debut in the third period in relief of Nie and stopped six of eight Kingston shot in 18 minutes of work.
Plymouth is back in action Saturday night at 7:30 pm at the Compuware Sports Arena against the Brampton Battalion. Tickets are scarce for the game but available by calling the Compuware Sports Arena box office at (734) 453-8400 starting at 11:00 am Saturday.
