Danville Otterbots News Release
DANVILLE, VA - Danville and their league leading offense found themselves in a pitcher's duel early on with the Kingsport Mets in the second game of their series on Tuesday. The Braves could not get a handle on Kingsport starter Martires Arias, and broke down late falling to the Mets 6-2.
Martires Arias has been in control every time he has stepped to the mound this season, and his latest victim was the Braves' offense. Arias went five strong innings allowing three hits, surrendering no runs, while walking and striking out five D-Braves.
The offense got going for Danville in the sixth inning, as they scored their first run of the ball game. With two outs, D-Braves second baseman Omar Obregon walked, bringing up Fernelys Sanchez. Sanchez would get an infield single on a shot to third, advancing Obregon to third, and then home on a throwing error from Kingsport first baseman Pedro Perez. Two innings later in the eighth, Obregon and Sanchez got it going again as Sanchez would advance Obregon to third on a single, bringing up pinch hitter Mike Dodig. A Dodig sacrifice fly to center would score Obregon for the final Danville run of the evening.
Max Povse got the start for Danville, and had one of his better outings of the season. The 6'8" righty went five innings, a career high, giving up only one run on five hits while striking out four Mets. Povse gave up his lone run in the fifth inning on a Jose Garcia single to right that scored Wuilmer Becerra.
The D-Braves were down 3-2 going into the ninth inning, however five Danville errors doomed the Braves, as the miscues resulted in four unearned runs for the Kingsport Mets. Two costly errors in the ninth resulted in three runs for Kingsport, giving them the lead 6-2, which held up as the final score. The error that busted it wide open for the Kingsport offense was on a sacrifice bunt attempt that pitcher Bradley Roney threw over the head of Matt Tellor on the attempt at first, and resulted in the first run of the inning. The error extended the inning for the Mets, and allowed them to pile on two more before the game's end.
Matt Tellor extended his hitting streak to nine games tonight going 1-4 with a single up the middle in the ninth inning. The other streak that was in play tonight was the Danville bullpen's 50.1 straight scoreless innings, however that impressive streak came to an end in the sixth inning with Colby Holmes on the mound. The trio of Holmes, Kyle Kinman, and Bradley Roney gave up five runs, one earned, in four innings of work tonight, effectively putting an end to the streak.
Tomorrow night will be the rubber match between the Danville Braves (23-14) and the Kingsport Mets (18-20) to decide the series. Danville will throw Andry Ubiera (3-0, 2.14 ERA), and Kingsport will throw Yoryi Nuez (4-1, 2.60) as both teams look to take the third game. Tomorrow's first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at American Legion Post 325 Field at Dan Daniel Memorial Park.
