Greeneville Astros News Release

Elizabethton, TN - The Appalachian League West division-leading Elizabethton Twins (23-14), carried by Trey Vavra and Tyler Mautner, defeated the Greeneville Astros (19-19) on Monday night at Joe O'Brien Field, 13-6. With the loss, the Astros slipped into third place and a half game behind the Johnson City Cardinals in the division.

Vavra and Mautner combined to drive in 10 of the Twins' 13 runs on the night. Vavra, the designated hitter, went three-for-five with two runs, a double and six RBI. Meanwhile, Mautner was two-for-four with two runs, a double, a home run and four RBI.

Before the Twins' hitters gave them a big cushion, the Astros actually came out and took the first lead of the game. In the first inning, after a Jason Martin leadoff walk and an Antonio Nunez sacrifice bunt, Yonathan Mejia hit a ground ball RBI single into center field to put the Astros on top, 1-0.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Twins quickly answered and jumped ahead with a two-run single by Vavra. However, it was a six-run third inning that put them in command.

The Twins' runs in the third began with a Tyler Kuresa RBI single. Then, Vavra and Mautner each doubled to bring in three more. Finally, Pat Kelly hit a two-run triple to give the Twins an 8-2 lead.

Four innings later, in the seventh, Vavra and Mautner struck again for the Twins. With the bases loaded, Vavra got another two-run single. Then, Mautner cranked out a three-run homer to left field to give the Twins a five-run inning.

In the eighth, the Astros responded with a five-run inning of their own. Jeffry Santos had a two-run single to get it started. Then, Antonio Nunez got a two-run triple and later scored on a wild pitch to make the score 13-6. However, that was as close as the score would get as the deficit was too much to overcome for the Astros.

Twins' starting left-hander Matt Batts (2-0) pitched the first six innings and gave up one run on two hits with eight strikeouts as he earned the win.

The Astros will travel back to Elizabethton on Tuesday for game two of their three-game series against the Twins. Game time is set for 7:00pm.
