BLUEFIELD, Va. - The Kingsport losing streak is three games. The bats are still cold as Kingsport could only muster four more hits. On Monday, they lost to the Bluefield Ridge Runners via a walk-off single by a score of 3-2.
Bluefield (15-14) struck first in the bottom of the second as Danny Barbero scored on a called balk, making it 1-0 in favor of the home team.
Kingsport (15-16) tied the game at one in the top of the fourth as Logen Sutton sent a ball into the left field corner, scoring Deniel Ortiz from first base with a double.
An RBI groundout by Mike Mancini scored the go-ahead run for Kingsport in the top of the fifth making it 2-1 Axmen. It appeared that Kyle Booker would also score on a passed ball that went into the Kingsport dugout, but the umpire decided that Booker didn't make it to third in time to be awarded home. This was evil foreshadowing in this game for Kingsport.
Jack Doyle tied the ballgame once more in the bottom of the sixth, leaving the yard over the left field wall for his first home run of the season.
The final frames went fairly quietly until Bluefield worked the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth. It would be Doyle once again as the hero with the walk-off RBI single scoring Jack Johnston. The final die was cast, 3-2, in favor of Bluefield.
It was an excellent outing for Derek McCarley for Kingsport. He went 6 2/3 innings striking out seven and walking four. Kaleb Townsend gave up the winning run and was charged with the loss. Sam Broderson for Bluefield collected his second win of the year.
The series shifts back to Kingsport tomorrow for game four of the year between the two teams. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m.
