Mississippi Braves News Release
PEARL, MS - The Mississippi Braves (42-50, 9-15) snapped a three-game losing streak with a 4-1 win over the Pensacola Blue Wahoos (56-37, 15-10) on Friday night at Trustmark Park.
Nolan Kingham pitched five shutout innings, Jesse Franklin V notched three hits with two RBI and Drew Lugbauer homered in the win.
Kingham made his first start in Mississippi this season after being transferred from Triple-A Gwinnett on Tuesday. The 26-year-old threw an efficient 60 pitches, dominating over five innings. Kingham handled a couple of baserunners in both the third and fifth innings but easily navigated out of trouble. The right-hander allowed six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
Kingham got some help from his defense. In the fifth, Lugbauer made a tremendous diving stop on an infield grounder and flipped to Kingham, who beat a speedy Jose Devers to the first base bag.
The M-Braves struck first in the second inning. Lugbauer hammered a ball into the right-field bullpen, his 15th home run of the season, to make it 1-0. Beau Philip added another run with an RBI base hit to left field on a play where Javier Valdes beat out a throw to the plate to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, Franklin V smashed a two-run double to left center to make it 4-0. Again, a runner beat a throw to the plate as Lugbauer slid in ahead of a potential tag at the plate.
Pensacola scored a run in the seventh on a fielder's choice to make it 4-1, but a 4-6-3 double play helped Hayden Harris get out of the inning without further damage.
After allowing a leadoff double in the ninth, Kyle Wilcox retired three batters in a row for his third save.
The fifth game of the series is on Saturday night at Trustmark Park. LHP Luis De Avila (5-5, 3.04) will make the start Mississippi while LHP Jake Eder (1-1, 4.50) will start for Pensacola. The first pitch is at 6:35 pm CT, with coverage starting 15 minutes before on 102.1 The Box, MiLB First Pitch App, and Bally Live.
