AUBURN, Wash. - A stellar effort from newcomer Tim Ellis helped the King County Royals upset the Gallup Outlaws, 122-114, in an American Basketball Association game at Green River Community College Wednesday night.
Ellis, a 2006 ABA All-Star, played his first game for the Royals this season and led all scorers with 42 points.
Gallup, coming off a loss in Bellingham on Tuesday, led for most of the first half and third quarter before King County closed out the period with a 22-6 run to take a 91-81 lead going into the fourth quarter.
The Royals were able to extend their lead to as much as 18 points, at 104-86, 4:52 into the fourth quarter.
Gallup was able to put together a decent run in the game's final stages as they trimmed the deficit to five on two separate occasions, the last at 115-110 with 1:18 to play. The Royal's Randy Green was able to secure the win by connecting on free throws in the final minute.
Ellis led five King County players in double figures. Kyle Keyes scored 28 points while Green added 21.
Gallup, which lost its fourth consecutive game after starting the season 8-3, was led by Luis Richardson's 19 points.
The same two teams battle in a re-match on Friday, with a 8 p.m. tip-off set for the Wellness Center at North Seattle Community College.
