Kickers To Host Silverbacks As Playoff Race Tightens
August 10, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1)
Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA â (Tuesday, August 10, 2004) â The Richmond Kickers (14-7-3, 45 points) will host the Atlanta Silverbacks (12-7-2, 38 points) this Thursday, August 12th at 7:00 p.m. at the University of Richmond Stadium for the fourth and final regular season match up between the two teams. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive a "Project Family" photo frame magnet courtesy of Radio Disney!
After suffering two losses to the Silverbacks earlier this season, the Kickers came away with a 2-1 victory in Atlanta on August 1st when the two teams last met. Most recently, Atlanta dropped a 4-3 decision to the Virginia Beach Mariners last weekend, while Richmond defeated the Charleston Battery in double overtime. The Silverbacks will face the Virginia Beach Mariners for the second time in five days on Wednesday, prior to the Kickers match on Thursday.
"As we make the final push for the playoffs, it is vital that we play each game as if it's our last," says Richmond Kickers Head Coach Leigh Cowlishaw. "Nothing less than a win will be good enough."
Players To Watch
Kickers: The Kickers have had 11 different goal scorers over the past 24 games this season and Richmond's defenders proved to be dangerous offensively as both goals scored against Charleston were tallied by a solid Kickers back line. Defender Matt Bobo scored the equalizer with a header from a corner kick, for his first goal of the season and his second in Kickers history. One of only two Kickers to play every minute of every game this season, veteran defender Kevin Knight secured the game-winner with a volley in the second overtime period, earning Team of the Week honors for the second time this season.
Silverbacks: Former Kicker Mac Cozier tallied two of three Atlanta goals in last week's match against the Mariners. Cozier leads the Silverbacks in goals (10) and points (23) and is tied for fourth in the league in goals and points. Goalkeeper Joe Barton is ranked third in the league for 10 goals against this season and is tied for ninth for nine shutouts.
Playoff Race Continues
With only a few games left in the season, a tight race for the playoffs has developed. Merely nine points separate the top five teams in the Eastern Conference, with only four teams advancing for post-season play. Richmond currently resides in second place with 45 points, two points behind first-ranked Montreal (14-4-5, 47 points). The Rochester Raging Rhinos follow the Kickers closely with 42 points, good for third place in the Eastern Conference. Battling for the fourth-place position are the Atlanta Silverbacks (12-7-2, 38 points) and the Syracuse Salty Dogs (11-7-5, 38 points).
