Richmond Kickers News Release
CARY, N.C. - The Richmond Kickers (3-4-3) fell 2-1 on the road to North Carolina FC (1-6-1) Friday night ending the Kickers' unbeaten run in the month of June.
The match started in Richmond's favor. The Kickers created space on the right wing with Jonathan Bolanos running onto the ball and playing a low cross from the backline to Cameron Vickers who was running towards the near post -- NCFC would deflect the ball out for a corner.
On the subsequent corner, NCFC would nearly head in an own goal before half-clearing the ball which fell to Ivan Magalhães. The defender played a ball directly back into the six-yard box to Emiliano Terzaghi who headed in his fourth goal of the season and gave the Reds the lead.
North Carolina would grow into the game holding much of the possession without threatening a goal, and the first half would end with the Reds holding onto its lead.
However, NCFC would find its equalizer early in the second half. After earning a corner in the 47th minute, Jay Tee Kamara served up a ball into the box and Max Flick was able to get his head to the ball first and head in a ball to level the scoreline.
Kamara gave the home side the lead in the 56th minute. After holding the ball up just outside the top of the box, he switched the ball back and forth before finding enough space to launch a shot that beat Akira Fitzgerald to the inside of the left post.
The Kickers would drop to 10-men minutes later after Esteban Calvo received his second yellow card of the match. However, despite the man-advantage, the Kickers would nearly find its equalizer late.
In the 87th minute, a dangerous ball was played into the box and found its way to Oalex Anderson on the back post. He directed his header towards goal but it was cleared off the line at the last minute. Then, deep into stoppage, Nil Vinyals delivered a ball from the left wing into the box that was deflected out. Knowing it was the final chance of the night, Fitzgerald was out of his box on the right wing to serve the ball to the back post. Anderson would get his head on the ball but his attempt would go just wide and the head official would blow his whistle to end the match.
The Kickers return to City Stadium to face North Texas SC on July 3. The Reds will look to earn its first win over the MLS-affiliate since joining USL League One. Kickoff for the match is set for 6:30 p.m.
