GARDEN CITY, NY - The Richmond Kickers battled FC New York to a 0-0 draw Friday night at Adelphi University as Kickers goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale posted his fifth shutout of the season.
A defensive clash in the midfield led to an uneventful first half as both teams struggled to make headway in their respective offensive third.
The Kickers found their stride after the second half restart when midfielder Stanley Nyazamba nearly broke the ice in the 54th minute. Played into the box on the left side, his right-footed strike ricocheted off the near post and into the arms of the waiting goalkeeper, Steven Diaz. Kickers midfielder Edson Elcock's aim was also slightly off six minutes later when he volleyed a cleared ball over the crossbar.
Later, second half substitute Shaka Bangura teamed up with Elcock and owned the right wing for the last 15 minutes of the match. First, Bangura served a cross to the far post, where Matthew Delicâte was positioned unmarked, but Diaz made a heroic kick save to prevent the league's leading scorer's easy header from two yards out.
Minutes after, Elcock sliced through the defense and laid the ball off to a wide open Delicâte at the penalty spot, but Diaz read his curling shot and made the block. Bangura tried to find the Kickers resident hit man again inches from the goal line but Diaz made a Spiderman-like jump off his line to stop the determined ball.
FC New York were dangerous with several distance shots but nothing materialized enough to test Pascale as the two clubs finished regulation scoreless.
The Richmond Kickers continue their three game road stand next Tuesday, June 28 when they face the Columbus Crew of Major League Soccer at Columbus Crew Stadium. They resume regular season action in Rochester on Friday, July 1 before returning to Richmond City Stadium to host the Dayton Dutch Lions and a Fourth of July Fest on Monday, July 4 at 1:00 p.m. Avoid lines at the gate and click and print your tickets in advance at RichmondKickers.com.
