Richmond Kickers News Release
RICHMOND, VA - (Friday, January 14, 2011) - The Richmond Kickers are pleased to announce the 2011 professional schedule, opening the USL PRO season against Orlando City on Saturday, April 2 at 5:00 p.m. The Kickers will call Richmond City Stadium home during the entire 2011 season.
USL PRO will feature three highly competitive five-team divisions in 2011 including the American, National and International divisions. The Richmond Kickers will compete in the American Division alongside longtime rivals Charleston Battery, Charlotte Eagles and Wilmington Hammerheads, and newcomer Orlando City. The National Division will feature Dayton Dutch Lions, Harrisburg City Islanders, FC New York, Pittsburgh Riverhounds and Rochester Rhinos while Barracuda FC of Antigua and Barbuda, Los Angeles Blues, Puerto Rico United, River Plate Puerto Rico and Sevilla FC Puerto Rico will comprise the International Division.
The Richmond Kickers will play 24 games in the 2011 regular season, facing each team in the American and National Divisions home and away. Rounding out the home schedule, the Kickers will play host to Barracuda FC of Antigua and Barbuda and Los Angeles Blues in July and will venture a three-game road swing in Puerto Rico in June when they take on Sevilla FC Puerto Rico twice and Puerto Rico United once. The Kickers home schedule will conclude on Saturday, August 6 against the Dayton Dutch Lions before wrapping up the 2011 season four days later on the road to Wilmington.
Richmond City Stadium, just off the Downtown Expressway, will once again serve as home base for the Kickers for the 2011 home season. Seven of the Kickers 12 regular season home games will be played on Saturdays while four matches will take place under the lights on Fridays. The only exception will be when the Kickers host the third annual Independence Day Bash on Monday, July 4 against Puerto Rico United at 1:00 p.m. New in 2011, Saturday home games in April will kick off at 5:00 p.m.
Established in 1993, the Richmond Kickers have consistently been one of the most successful professional soccer clubs in America. Over the past 18 seasons, Richmond has qualified for postseason play 16 times, and reached the title match in 2010 for the sixth time in the past nine campaigns, falling just short of the Championship title following a 2-1 loss to the Charleston Battery. Richmond's seven previous league Championship appearances (1995, 1996, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009) include winning the Premier League title in 1995, a shoot-out loss to Seattle in the USL First Division final in 2005 and taking the USL Second Division crown twice against Charlotte in 2006 and 2009.
