LYNN, Mass. -- The North Shore Spirit are proud to announce that KeySpan will be the title sponsor of Slugger's Reading program for the 2004 season.

As the title sponsor of the reading program, KeySpan will assist the North Shore Spirit in providing a unique literacy campaign to the North Shore region. The reading program involves students from kindergarten through eighth grade in an incentive-based, eight-week program during which the students strive to read a set number of books.

For every goal a student achieves, they will reach the next base on a baseball diamond and receive a prize from a local sponsor. After reaching "home plate" the child will receive a ticket to attend a North Shore Spirit game with their school during the 2004 season. At this game, the students will be honored for their achievements and a KeySpan representative will be in attendance. KeySpan's involvement and support of the program will allow the Spirit to provide incentives and prizes to each successful child at each of the bases.

"Education is high on KeySpan's list of corporate concerns," said Nick Stavropoulos, President of KeySpan Energy Delivery New England. "The better educated our children, the more sophisticated our workforce becomes. The more competitive our workforce is, the stronger our communities become. And reading is the most important block in that foundation."

Over 13,000 students from thirty schools throughout Lynn, Everett, Saugus, Salem and North Reading are participating in the 2004 inaugural program. Many schools recently received a visit from Slugger himself to kickoff the reading program and to encourage the value of reading at an early age.

The Spirit begin the 2004 season at home on May 26 against the Allentown Ambassadors at the New Fraser Field in Lynn. All games will once again be broadcast on the flagship station of the North Shore Spirit, WESX 1230-AM.
