The Frederick Keys (13-17) took two games from the Kinston Indians (16-14) in a doubleheader at Harry Grove Stadium on Wednesday, May 7 before 1,783 fans. With the doubleheader sweep, the Keys took 3-out-of-4 games from the K-Tribe and have now won three straight games.
The second game was a pitchers' duel, with the teams only registering 1 run and 7 hits between them. The Keys broke the game open in the 6th inning when designated hitter Mike Huggins doubled off right-handed reliever Doug Lantz, scoring first baseman Patrick O'Sullivan from first base. Right-handed reliever Sendy Rleal came on with one out in the 9th inning to retire the next two batters and receive the save, his 5th of the season.
Keys starting left-handed pitcher Anthony Boughner went 4.0 innings in his first start of the season and gave up 0 runs off of 2 hits. Relief pitcher Andy Mitchell (1-0) pitched 2.1 scoreless innings to pick up the victory, his first of the season.
Left-handed pitcher Kurt Birkins (2-2) pitched 5.0 innings, giving up 4 runs off of 10 hits to record his second victory of the season in the Keys 6-4 win in the first game of the doubleheader.
First baseman Mike Huggins hit a two-run home run in the 4th inning, his second of the year, to break open a 2-2 tie. The Keys added a run in the 5th inning on an RBI base hit by left fielder Cory Keylor. Kinston cut the lead to 1 with consecutive run scoring doubles in the 6th inning, but relief pitcher Carl Makowsky came in to get the next three outs in the inning and pitched a scoreless 7th to record the save, his second of the season.
The Keys added a run in the bottom of the 6th inning on a RBI double by second baseman Omar Rogers. Rogers finished the game 3-for-3 with 3 runs scored and 2 RBI to lead the Keys offensive attack. Keylor and Huggins each had 2 hits for the Keys, and Huggins led the team in RBI with 3 in the first game.
The Keys start a four-game road series with the Lynchburg Hillcats on Thursday, May 8. Game time for the first game is set for 7:05 p.m. Right-handed pitcher David Farren (0-0, 2.57) will be making the start for the Keys, his first of the season. Scheduled to take the mound for the Hillcats is right-handed pitcher Patrick O'Brien (0-3, 8.53).
