Keys Hold Off Pelicans, 8-5
July 23, 2010 - Carolina League (CarL1)
Frederick Keys News Release
The Keys exploded for eight runs in the first three innings against Pelicans starter, LHP Brett Oberholtzer, but almost let the big lead slip away. Myrtle Beach cut their deficit to three runs in the eighth inning but could not plate anymore runs as they Keys held on for the 8-5 victory on Friday night.
RHP Zach Clark started for Frederick on Friday night, his first appearance in the Carolina League in 2010. Clark, who spent parts of three seasons in Frederick, allowed a run to score in the first inning before settling down. On the night, Clark allowed two runs on eight hits while striking out six and walking one over six innings.
The Keys offense helped out Clark immediately. Frederick plated five runs in the bottom of the first including a two-run double by SS Pedro Florimon.
After a quick second inning, the Keys offense was back at it in the third. Following singles by 3B Billy Rowell and 2B LJ Hoes, DH Miguel Abreu hit a ball down the rightfield line that went underneath the fence in right for a ground rule double. Rowell scored on the play. The next batter up, Pedro Florimon, singled home Hoes and Abreu to give Frederick the seven-run advantage after just three innings. Florimon finished the night matching a season-high with four runs batted in.
Myrtle Beach started their comeback efforts in the seventh inning. Down by six runs, CF L.V. Ware and SS Mycal Jones each hit a solo homerun to cut the Pelicans deficit to four runs. The Pelicans scored another run in the eighth inning but stranded the bases loaded following a pop out by Mycal Jones in foul territory.
The Keys avoided another threat in the ninth inning. With two on and two out, RHP Jose Duran came in and shut the door. Duran got DH Gerry Rodriguez to ground out to end the game as Frederick prevailed with the three-run victory.
Frederick and Myrtle Beach will play game three of the series on Saturday evening at Harry Grove Stadium. The Keys will toss RHP Luis Noel (2-0, 1.64). First pitch is set for 7:00 with fireworks scheduled to follow the contest.
