Charlotte Knights News Release
(Indianapolis, IN) - Greg Golson broke-up a potential inning-ending double play with a key move in the eighth inning and it helped the Knights get past first place Indianapolis for the third-straight day.
With the bases loaded and one out, Golson's take-out slide at second base in the eighth inning proved to be the difference as Jared Mitchell scored the game-winning run and the Charlotte Knights went on to beat the Indianapolis Indians 2-1 on Wednesday in game three of the four-game series from Victory Field in Indianapolis. With the win, the Knights improved to a season-high 17 games over .500 (68-51).
The eighth inning started with Mitchell getting hit by a pitch from Indians reliever Doug Slaten (3-2, 1.47). Tyler Saladino then followed by laying down a sacrifice bunt, which moved Mitchell to scoring position with just one out. After Jim Gallagher walked, Golson followed with a single to load the bases.
Tyler Kuhn, the next batter, then grounded into what appeared to be a 4-6-3 double play, but Golson instead broke it up with a slide into second base to keep the Indians from completing the double play. The heads up base running by Golson allowed Mitchell to score and give the Knights a 2-1 lead. It proved to be the turning point of the game.
Reliever Donnie Veal tossed a scoreless eighth after a solid seventh inning and Brian Omogrosso shut the door in the ninth to give the Knights the 2-1 win on Wednesday. Veal (7-3, 2.12) earned the victory while Omogrosso recorded his seventh save.
LHP Hector Santiago started for the Knights and allowed three hits over five scoreless innings in just his second start of the season for Charlotte. Santiago, who began the season with Chicago, was optioned to Charlotte on July 30 and has been converted back to a starter. So far, the transition has been a good one.
Throwing 79 pitches, Santiago struck-out three batters and helped the Knights keep pace with the Indians on Wednesday. In two starts this season, Santiago has not allowed a run in eight innings. He has yet to record a win.
The two first place teams will conclude their four-game series on Thursday at 7:05 p.m. RHP Scott Caroll will take the mound for Charlotte in the finale.
