Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees News Release
Rochester, NY - With runners on second and third and nobody out Rochester reliever Kyle Waldrop chose to intentionally walk Darnell McDonald to load the bases for a force out. Ramiro Pena made the Red Wings pay with a two-RBI single to left field leading Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to a 7-3 victory over the Rochester Red Wings on Wednesday night in game three of a four game set at Frontier Field.
Chris Dickerson put the Yankees on the board early with a solo home run to left-centerfield off of Red Wings starter Shairon Martis. Dickerson's sixth home run of the year gave Scranton/Wilkes-Barre the 1-0 lead in the ballgame heading into the home half of the first inning. It was his fourth leadoff homer for the Yankees, with the last being on August 5th against Indianapolis at Frontier Field. Former Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankee Matt Carson answered with a home run of his own. The only difference was Carson homered with Eduardo Escobar on base, therefore giving the Red Wings the 2-1 lead in the ball game.
In the top of the seventh, Melky Mesa crushed his second home run of the year over the left field wall to knot the score at 2-2. Clete Thomas then hit a long solo shot to right-center giving Rochester the 3-2 advantage heading into the ninth. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's newest addition Austin Romine led off the top of the ninth with a double to right and then came around to score on a Kosuke Fukudome RBI double to left-center to tie the score yet again. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre then took the 5-3 lead on the two run double by Pena and never looked back. The Yankees got two more runs on a two-RBI slow rolling infield single to short off the bat of Eduardo Nunez making it a 7-3 ball game. Dickerson made the second RBI possible as he was hustling the whole way.
Mike O'Connor got the no decision for the Yankees in his longest outing since shutting out the Norfolk Tides as a member of the Columbus Clippers on August 6, 2008. The southpaw tossed 6 1/3 innings allowing two runs on just three hits, while striking out seven and not walking a batter. Following the Carson homer in the bottom of the first he retired 18 batters in a row before allowing a single off the bat of Chris Parmelee with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Shairon Martis got the no decision tossing seven innings allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out four and walking two. Deolis Guerra got the loss for the Red Wings, while Juan Cedeno picked up the win for the Yankees. Ryota Igarashi entered the game with a man on second and nobody out to earn his eighth save of the season.
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and Rochester conclude a four game series at Frontier Field on Thursday night at 7:05. Veteran right-hander John Maine takes the bump for the Yankees, while the Red Wings counter with rehabbing Major Leaguer P.J. Walters. This will be Walters second appearance against the Yankees this season, with the other coming on July 1st where he earned the no decision allowing three runs over four innings in a 5-3 Red Wings victory. Thursday night will be Maine's first start against the Red Wings this season.
