Gary SouthShore Railcats News Release
WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Winnipeg right fielder Kevin West hit two home runs and drove in six to lead the Goldeyes to a 7-5 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats Wednesday night at a windy Canwest Park.
West grabbed his first RBI with a sacrifice fly in the first, then went to work off RailCats starter Tony Cogan (1-2). In the third, West crushed a three-run home run to deep left to tie the game, and in the fifth he capped the Goldeyes scoring with a two-run shot. West finished the day 2-for-3 and increased his home run total to four and nearly doubled his RBI output, up now to 13.
The RailCats had an early 4-1 lead in the game, getting a run in the first inning and three more in the second off Goldeyes starter Ben Pfinsgraff (2-1). Mike Rohde walked to start the second and scored on Anthony Esquer's base hit to right. Esquer was at second with two outs when Mike Massaro doubled him home on an 0-2 pitch, and Massaro himself scored when Rob Marconi lined an 0-2 offering to left for a single. Pfinsgraff settled in nicely after the rocky start, however, pitching into the seventh to earn the win.
Massaro was once again one of the RailCats stars, going 3-for-5 with a single, double and solo home run. The longball was just the fourth of Massaro's career and came in the seventh inning to get the RailCats within two runs. Massaro is on a 10-game hitting streak and has 20 hits over those 10 games, raising his average to a team-leading .412.
Cogan struggled in his fourth start of the year after three excellent outings, allowing all seven runs on eight hits in 5.0 innings. The RailCats bullpen was once again solid behind Cogan, with Alex Rollin tossing two scoreless innings and Aaron Cook getting through the eighth unscathed.
The RailCats (6-7) will enjoy their first off day of the season Thursday night before opening a three-game series in North Dakota against the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks (5-6) Friday night at 7 p.m. Right-hander Chris Jones (1-0, 1.59 ERA) will start for the âCats against Fargo's Billy Weitzman (1-1, 6.55), and that game will be broadcast live on 89.1 FM and online at www.railcatsbaseball.com.
Notes: With the wind blowing out to left at up to 30 m.p.h., the two teams combined to hit four home runs, all to leftfield ... Massaro has never hit more than one home run in a season as a pro, getting one in 2005, 2006 and 2007 ... Massaro's 10-game hitting streak comes on the heels of a 1-for-12 start to the season ... the RailCats amassed 11 hits, their most in a game since May 21 ... Marconi went 3-for-5 with three singles, his third three-hit day of the season.
